In Senior Design today I was looking over some weight estimation Matlab code I sent to the CAD guy that supposedly wasn't working. The first attempt to run the code worked. Without thinking I said plenty loud that it was working because "I just sprayed my magic all over it."

The old man storms into the office my boss and I share. Through heavy breaths he says "well there was a fire today." We gave a courtesy laugh assuming he was joking. Yesterday my boss, Corey, asked Stan if there was a fire in the sheet metal room. Stan gave him a hard time for not knowing what the explosion mold, grinding and welding smell like. Stan wasn't laughing any more. Yesterday he was grinding with sparks flying at the wall. Today he rotated his "rig." Most of the sparks were flying at the wall. Others found a dry shop towel on the floor and began to smolder. Not far away was a can of MEK, a strong liquid solvent with flammable vapors, that Stan claims he closed. Stan looks up from his work after the room becomes very bright. The old man's pure white hair and handlebar mustache run for the fire extinguisher that has never been used in the history of this company. A yellowish-white powder suffocates the flame. A plume of smoke exists the building through large box fans installed in the exterior walls of the shop room. Stan looks at his work bench, tools and hardware covered with powder. A bag melted to shreds gives freedom to 3000 tiny rivets. Corey and I explode with authentic laughter as we evaluate the scene. Stan’s still not laughing; he's upset about the mess on his project. The old man gathers his Girl Scout cookies and flannel coat and goes home.

In 2006, UT Arlington alumnus Jeff Smith received the Kauffman Foundation's Community Award in recognition of his successful efforts to improve the economic conditions of the citizens of Magote, a mountain village in Honduras. Kauffman Community Awards were created in 2002 to honor entrepreneurs who have made a significant difference in their communities and to recognize their valuable philanthropic contributions to society. In this presentation, Smith will describe how and why people with technical skills can become involved in humanitarian service.

Dr. Jeff Smith received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science & Engineering at UT Arlington. In 1993, he co-founded and served as president and CEO of OnRamp Technologies, which grew to become one of the largest web-hosting companies in the world. In 2002, Smith founded SensorLogic, one of the industry's first Telemetry Service Providers, considered a pioneer in the emerging machine-to-machine communications market. Most recently, he founded Ublip, a provider of location tracking software allowing companies to instantly locate vehicles, company assets, or personnel - anything that moves.

First serious post in 8 years:

I’m taking a political science class on state and local government. At first I was only appreciative that the professor was my comic relief in between statics and engineering analysis II. However, discussing the Texas bill of rights and certain provisions it makes along with the controversial issue of same-sex marriages, I wonder the validity of a marriage license. Now before making Neper feel like such an ass because of the idea that I would get any of these concepts from that guy I know (although he did cultivate interest and basis), at least pretend like you skimmed the post.

Why do people get “married”? legal or church

a.) sovereign union - - public declaration of covenant between man, woman and God, originating and intended purpose centered around religion

b.) get (in TX) insurance benefits, inheritance rights, and ability to file joint tax returns

c.) secular, attempt at guilt free - - some rationalization or structure to social practices, legally binding contract (b & c including gay marriage)

Now, it seems to me that each of these could take place without a marriage license.

a.) Have a Church wedding

b.) Make legal provisions ( i.e. written will)

c.) Make a legally binding contract fearing separation (same idea as a prenuptial agreement, or community property clause)

A classmate sent me an email regarding his opinions of the Establishment Clause, its too often interpretation and repercussions thereof. This brought to my attention that the First Amendment prevents the government from mandating a religious act. (Think about that for a second. An alternative wording or interpretation I prefer.) Hold that thought.

A Common law marriage in TX occurs at the point one of the following takes place

a.) same residence for at least 60 consecutive days

b.) register at accommodations as Mr. and Mrs.

c.) Publicly claim to be married

Now, granted millions of Americans live under these conditions and nothing ever comes of it, yet is this not legally declaring two (the quantity, a whole different issue) people as being married? Is marriage a solely religious practice? Considering any motive except for a sovereign union, could take place without religion (or “church”) involved, is this not the only form of marriage, leaving anything else to fall more realistically as a construction or convenience of society?

So the rationale of a marriage license or any gov’t recognition of marriage would be what again?

Family meeting family? Who does that? Well, it’s all over now. After 4 buckets of cat hair and a massive margarita vase bouquet, the weekend began. With enough cheddar worst for gazing children and a whole chocolate cake for me, C-4 was well prepared. Having been banished from the kitchen, it proved quite difficult to sneak a dishwasher load at all. The mothers started sharing their life stories within 10 minutes whereas it took the dads two days to realize they could talk about artillery indefinitely. There wasn't any biting or fighting, and the only frown came from Calvin due to mere boredom while enduring a pink purse pursuit in the mall. Everyone went home happy and seemingly pleased with how the weekend went. Too bad Calvin never got his dollar; wait a minute, neither did I :-)

What an awesome wkend besides the fact that it’s over. It was really nice to just relax and not have anything to stress over besides brake lights and a heap of laundry. I even got to work on my formerly non-existent tan and finish Evangelion (not simultaneously : )! It’s a real bummer (yes, in the butt) that parents can at times seem to lose the logic they tried to teach us. All will be resolved.

I'm still enjoying work, because I don't. Ok well, I show up but I’m basically the recorded voice you hear when you call any technology-on-par company. I even got to read a text book at work today!

Speaking of which, I started my first summer school class tonight. The first half of US history (I already took the second). It seems like it'll be alright. The prof is attempting a different approach than is typical. He had fun making all the class realize how little we really knew about history (pointing out, or more so bringing us to the conclusion that we're all dumb Americans), emphasizing that this class will be different than what you got from the high school coach : )

No more FORTRAN! Whoot! I finally finished my last project for my numerical analysis and programming class. That was a bear. But thanks to a close individual with a plethora of c knowledge far beyond my own, we managed to create some code of awesome.

ok, serious question...Who else can say their boyfriend will help her program in c and FORTRAN one day and then endure shoe shopping the next?
